HARESHAW ORAL HISTORY COMMUNITY PROJECT IN BELLINGHAM

An exciting five month oral history project is due to kick off this week in Bellingham as a partnership between a number of the community groups in Bellingham and Northumberland National Park Authority. The project is funded by Europe and NWET, the Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust.

The project will focus on a section of valley occupied by Hareshaw Burn between the town of Bellingham and Hareshaw Lynn. The social history of Hareshaw offers great potential for interpretive and educational work. The aim of the project is to research and record that social history, in particular its recreational and industrial use from the Victorian times to the present day, through the reminiscences of those who have worked, lived and played there. The intention is to share these reminiscences with the local community and all those who have an interest in Hareshaw today.

We are seeking to interview and record anyone who has lived and worked in Bellingham or was once a member of the community and has memories of Hareshaw to share. Perhaps you no longer live there? Perhaps it was your parents or grandparents who recounted tales of how the path to the Lynn was built, or could remember the old iron works? Perhaps you have photographs or artefacts of past and present Hareshaw that you are prepared to share? We welcome all contributions.

If you are interested in contributing to this project and would like to share your stories, please contact Susan Mitchell, Hareshaw Oral History Project Officer, at 8 Dunwoodie Terrace, Hexham or call her on 01 434 605 695.
