RAIL TRANSPORT

It would be nice to give loads of timetable and price information, but to be honest, they change often so you should make direct contact with the train operators to confirm your journey. As can be seen by the rail map, the region is surrounded by the rail network. The major lines rum from north to south, that is London to Edinburgh and London to Glasgow. Various deals are on offer including 'stop-overs' to allow you to break your journey. Car hire can be arranged from all main towns, but again, book ahead and look for those special deals.

The South Tynedale Railway at Alston (01 434 382 828), is 2.25 miles long, but it's narrow gauge and well worth checking out for enthusiasts.  Services operate between Alston in Cumbria and Kirkhaugh in Northumberland from April to October plus certain services such as The Santa Special during the winter.
