To say that the North Pennines provides some of the most outstanding walking in Britain is no exaggeration. The region can boast a National Park, An Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) and is often referred to as "England's Last Wilderness". This section attempts to provide as much information as possible about walking events throughout the year, but it is worth highlighting that there is a huge amount of good walks for you to choose from.
Perhaps the first place to start with a topic on
walking is the Ramblers Association. This long established The Ramblers in the North Pennines. The North Pennines are widely recognised as one of the top locations for walkers in Britain. Unlike other regions, there is great variety of both scenery and the type of walk you want. Take a leisurely stroll by the many picturesque rivers, or take a tougher route across the high fells, the choice is enormous. Walking can be ideal for those who want solitude and for those who want the more social side. You dont have to be in a club, but there is one organisation that is worth considering for everyone. We asked the specialists, The Ramblers about what they do and for their views on walking, this is what they had to say. "All of us suffer from the pressures of the 20th Century - what better way to escape than through the simple pleasure of walking? Walking is the perfect way to experience and enjoy the natural landscape. It gives a unique feeling of freedom and pleasure - a wonderful opportunity to revitalise your body and relax your mind. It's a great stress-buster and can even improve your general health. In short, walking is a great way to enhance your quality of life. Many of us take the countryside and the breathing space it offers for granted, but without the constant vigilance of the Ramblers' Association, much of the countryside would be closed to the public and many public footpaths would be lost. The Ramblers' Association is constantly working for walkers and the countryside in which they walk: keeping footpaths open, campaigning for the responsible access to open country and helping to protect endangered countryside. We know how vital it is that vulnerable areas of the countryside should be properly protected. We aim to keep the countryside open so everyone can enjoy it - you, your children and your grandchildren".
